Storm Damage & Insurance Claims

Storm damage roof repair and insurance documentation

Your roof is your property’s first line of defense against the elements. When a tropical storm or hurricane damages it, you want an experienced local roofer, not a storm chaser. International Roofing has over 25 years of experience helping residents of Fort Myers, Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero and Cape Coral with emergency roof repairs, and we respond quickly and efficiently to protect the integrity of your home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We are the Vargas family, a family-owned roofing company based in Fort Myers, and a licensed and insured Florida Certified Roofing Contractor (license CCC1332289). Call 239-202-8103.

What we do after a storm

  1. Protect the building. When Hurricane Ian peeled the metal panels off a four-building plaza in Fort Myers, our first priority was tarping all four structures to prevent additional water intrusion while insurance proceedings were underway. We do the same for homes.
  2. Inspect and document. A thorough roof inspection including leak detection, a full report, pictures and an action plan. Documentation is valuable if an insurance claim becomes necessary.
  3. Estimate and repair or replace. Accurate estimates and urgent turnaround. During the work we provide before and after pictures, reports and open communication so you understand what we are doing and why.

See our Emergency Roof Repairs page for the emergencies we handle: damage from tropical storms and hurricanes, fallen trees, roofs torn by high winds, roof penetrations and fire damage.

Storm damage is not always obvious

Hurricane Ian taught Southwest Florida that roof damage is not always visible from the ground, and some was not discovered until months later. Even minor roof openings let moisture into attics, insulation, drywall and framing. Many roofs also received temporary repairs after the storm that were never meant to provide long-term protection.

  • Tile roofs: broken tiles, missing ridge caps, underlayment deterioration.
  • Metal roofs: loose fasteners, panel movement, flashing damage.
  • Shingle roofs: lifted shingles, missing shingles, granule loss.
  • Everywhere: damaged flashing around chimneys, skylights, vents and HVAC equipment, rotting soffit and fascia, and interior signs such as water stains, mold, damp insulation and musty odors.

Before the storm: prepare and document

The best time to find roof problems is before hurricane season peaks, when contractors are not yet booked and materials are available. We offer a complimentary Storm Ready Report, a full inspection with photos, so you know where your roof stands.

  • Photograph your roof. Documentation can be valuable if an insurance claim becomes necessary.
  • Review your insurance coverage. Understand your deductible and policy requirements before storm season.
  • Fix small problems now. Cracked tiles, loose ridge caps, damaged shingles and roof leaks get worse in a storm.
  • Clean gutters and trim trees. Water needs to flow away, and branches become airborne in high winds.

Insurance and your new roof

We are roofers, not insurance adjusters, but our inspection reports and before and after photos give you and your adjuster a clear record of the damage and the repair. After a replacement we provide the wind mitigation inspection form for your insurance company, and a new roof with the right attachment earns wind mitigation credits. Read Roof age and homeowners insurance in Florida: the 15-year rule. Roof replacement can also be financed with no large down payment through the PACE program. See our Roof Financing page.

When repair is not enough

Signs a roof may need replacement instead of another repair: multiple active leaks, storm damage, aging materials and repeated repairs. A professional evaluation helps determine whether repair or replacement is the best option. Recent storm recoveries include a Cape Coral shingle home devastated by Ian and replaced with Brava composite tile, and an Ian-damaged Cape Coral home re-roofed with standing seam metal.

Storm damage questions

Call us at 239-202-8103. We respond 24 hours a day, protect the roof from further water intrusion, and inspect and document the damage with photos and a written report.

We are not public adjusters, but we provide the inspection report and before and after photos your adjuster needs, and we document everything during the repair.

Many post-Ian repairs were temporary. A storm damage inspection checks the repair quality, aging materials, new vulnerabilities and insurance-related concerns.

What homeowners say

My roof started leaking after Hurricane Milton. Lorena from International Roofing (a family company) found Cohen Law Group to take my case and secure a good settlement. I replaced the roof and lanai cage.
