Standing Seam Metal

Standing seam metal roofs are quickly becoming extremely popular as homeowners are interested in longevity, the modern look, and the protection that standing seam metal offers. Long vertical panels are joined by raised seams and every fastener is hidden beneath the panels. That protects you from Florida hurricanes and from the everyday worry of exposed fasteners: your roof will withstand 120 mph winds, and the fasteners will never be exposed to UV deterioration, moisture, wind and the elements that cause exposed fasteners to wear and fail over time.

Standing seam is available in a variety of colors and finishes including Kynar 500, a resin-based finish that exhibits long-life color retention and resistance to fading and chalking. Metal roofing lasts 40 to 70 years, compared with 10 to 15 for shingle in Florida. Aluminum or steel, snap-lock or nail-strip

• Aluminum does not rust, which makes it the right choice for waterfront and coastal homes where salt and brackish water attack steel. We used .032 aluminum panels on a recent waterfront new-construction home in Fort Myers and on a Naples home that had a rusting exposed-fastener roof.
• Steel holds a crisp profile and is the usual choice inland and on commercial buildings. We installed 24-gauge Kynar 500 steel on the Barkley Circle Plaza in Fort Myers.
• Profiles. We install 1.5-inch snap-lock and 1.5-inch nail-strip standing seam panels, over a high-temperature peel-and-stick underlayment made for metal such as Polyglass MTS.
• Colors. Kynar 500 finishes from Slate Gray and Dove Gray to Cosmic Dusk, with matching trim and gutters. See the color chart below.

Why standing seam instead of exposed-fastener metal

Older 5V metal roofs have every screw sitting in the weather. In our salt air the screws and washers rust, and the roof fails at the fasteners long before the panels wear out. Two of the metal roofs we replaced recently, a Naples home and a Fort Myers commercial plaza, were rusting or storm-damaged 5V roofs. Both were replaced with standing seam and hidden fasteners.

How a standing seam installation works with us

1. Free inspection, photos and a written estimate with aluminum and steel options and a Kynar 500 color chart.
2. HOA submittal if your community requires one, then the county or city permit and Notice of Commencement.
3. Tear-off, decking inspection and repair, high-temperature peel-and-stick underlayment, then the panels, trim and flashing.
4. County or city final inspection, warranty documents and your wind mitigation form.

Standing seam questions

Does my HOA allow standing seam?
Many Naples, Bonita Springs and Estero associations now approve standing seam in specific colors and profiles. We check your community's guidelines and prepare the submittal before quoting.

Aluminum or steel for my home?
Aluminum near the water, steel inland or on commercial buildings. We will recommend one based on where your home sits.

How does standing seam compare with stone coated steel?
